ShmooCon Labs

ShmooCon Labs is full. If you'd like to be put on the waitlist, contact us and we'll get your name down.

Yes, it is on! The 6th edition of Shmoocon will bring to you, once again, Shmoocon Labs!

So, what is Shmoocon Labs?

Every hacker conference needs a network. Face it: geeks can't live without internet, specially with the kick of getting to pwn other people (or get pwnd for that matter).

Shmoocon not only provides you access to the interwebs, but also, gives you access to build the network infrastructure that will be used. Cool, huh? No, it's better.

You can help building, from scratch, a production network, using commercial and open-source components to pulling and crimping cables.

And, yes, some troubleshooting will certainly be involved too, since MVOTFI (multi-vendor-on-the-fly interoperability) is never RTFM'd.

Obviously, all of this must happen in less than 36 hours. The quicker we build it, the earlier we'll be enjoying refreshing adult beverages and discussing how things could be done better, while monitoring tools are making sure the network (not necessarily the users) is not getting pwnd.

Seriously, why?

This has been proven in the past years as a great experience for the attendees to learn, teach and share information from layer 1 through 7 of the OSI model.

From building, to making sure it works, to troubleshooting any possible problems that may eventually arise. (and, yes, we've had some misplaced things before, like, network cables or features on commercial gear that should be turned off by default).

What do I get with this?

Con Attendees

Once you're signed-up for Shmoocon (yes, you need to have a Shmoocon ticket), you can choose to sign-up for SC-Labs, which will give you the opportunity to play with ( but necessarily limited too):

Vendors

Vendors have the opportunity of making sure they play well with others, in a relaxed (yet, fast-paced) environment with a bunch of people that could learn, like, recommend (and eventually, even put in a PO for ) your product(s).

Okay, okay, I am sold... how do I get in?

Attendee

If you are attending Shmoocon and would like to be considered for Shmoocon Labs please send a brief email to shmooconlabs@shmoocon.org explaining your why would like to participate and what your areas of expertise are and what technologies you might be willing to learn.

Please note that participating in Shmoocon Labs requires the following:

  1. You have a ticket to Shmoocon (yes, you must have a Shmoocon ticket before registering to Labs).
  2. You arrive at the hotel and are ready to participate by 8 AM on Thursday, Feb. 4, 2010 (the day before ShmooCon starts, 36 hours sometimes is not enough).
  3. If you're accepted, you will have to pay an additional $50. This is purely to cover the additional cost of hosting this event (and some SC-Labs cool swag).

Vendor

If you are a vendor that would like to participate in Shmoocon Labs please send an email to shmooconlabs@shmoocon.org, explaining your product offering and how you think it will compliment the Shmoocon network.

All vendors are expected to provide a product expert/engineer that is able to troubleshoot interoperability issues, possibly try new features, teach, promote, harden, protect from attacks, in a real production environment.

And, no, no one will open your box and void warranties. Besides, you get your logo on the website and a $500 credit on any Shmoocon sponsor package. If you're interested about Shmoocon Sponsorships, the sponsorship page has more information.
